From a historical viewpoint, Opals were first discovered in Ethiopia around 4000 BC, they have been used for about 6000 years. The mining of Opals took off around 1880, once their value was recognized. The name is from ancient Greek and Latin languages, which both mean “to perceive a colour change”. The oldest Opal relic was found in a cave in Kenya, this is how it was dated.
Opals are believed to enhance cosmic consciousness and induces psychic and mystical visions. It is said tp stimulate originality and creativity.
You will come across with two major kinds of Mexican Fire Opals. The first are a transparent orange, red, and yellow without any play of colour. Meanwhile, the second is brown and consists of tones, which are quite similar to some other precious Opals, such as Rainbow Opal.Transparent specimens have a good lustre.
As the name indicates, Fire Opal is found in Mexico. A brownish/red gemstone with flaming orange or cherry colours with transparent areas. They are always very brightly coloured, and can be a little bit cloudy to almost perfectly transparent.
